One of the most striking characteristics of our faith is the emphasis it places on forgiveness and on God as a forgiving God. The words of Jesus and the actions of Christians teach us a lesson. A world without forgiveness would mean a world full of bitterness and revenge. In the face of some vicious situations, it may seem that forgiveness is unrealistic and impossible to practice. But now and then someone comes along who shows the power of forgiveness, and in so doing reminds us of what Jesus really meant when he said:

“You have heard how it was said; you must love your neighbour and hate your enemy. But I say this to you: love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”. (Matthew 5:43)

Jesus told many stories about the forgiveness of God, for example… The Prodigal Son, The Lost Coin, The House of Simon the Pharisee, Zacchaeus…etc. God always wants the sinner to come back, God is always ready to forgive, Jesus taught us to understand the forgiveness of God in the way that he always welcomed sinners back and by including in his company, people excluded by others.

The Church teaches that penance is a sacrament. It celebrates the readiness of God to forgive and the Church to reconcile with the community. Forgiveness and reconciliation can only occur where there is genuine sorrow. This sacrament provides an opportunity to express this sorrow to God and the Church. The Church teaches that God is always ready to forgive the repentant sinner. It’s a sacrament of pardon and peace and it’s also a public sign and celebration of reconciliation with our neighbour. In this sacrament we have a constant reminder that God will always forgive us if we tell him we are sorry.
