Dear Parishioner
Nestled in the heart of our parish and community stands our local Catholic Church. These special spaces have witnessed countless moments that have shaped our lives. Our churches are places of welcome and gathering in faith for the celebration of Mass – our opportunities to take time amid our busy lives, to bring our intentions, to reflect on the Good News of the Gospel message, to be encouraged by each other, to be sustained and renewed by Jesus Christ on our spiritual journey as the People of God.
Within our Parish, we have and will continue to celebrate joyous occasions like Baptisms, First Communions, Confirmations, and Weddings, moments that have joined our communities together. They also provide solace in times of sorrow, holding our loved ones close as we lay them to rest in our peaceful graveyards.
We take this opportunity to give thanks for all who contribute financially to their parish. Your generosity sustains the parish in nurturing our faith and providing pastoral care to parishioners.
While parishes are getting back to pre-Covid 19 levels of financial contributions the ability of parishes to continue to operate and meet their financial commitments into the future in a time of ever-increasing costs is a matter of grave concern.
While all parishioners have the benefit of parish facilities that are well maintained, it is apparent that there is a limited number of households contributing and the total financial burden is being carried by a declining number of parishioners who attend Mass on a regular basis. To broaden the contribution base, all parishioners are now being invited to voluntarily contribute to the upkeep of their parish.
The envelopes for the new financial year are sent out at the beginning of April each year and it is noted that we receive a return of less than 40% of the envelopes distributed.
This weekly income helps the Parish to maintain our churches and safeguard them for generations to come. It allows us to pay the week-to-week expenses including the repair and maintenance and upkeep of Parish buildings and the cemeteries, light and hear, insurance, staff wages, church supplies, technology and the church grounds maintenance.
Your weekly contribution and annual diocesan collections also help fund the diocesan offices and services which provide support and advice in areas such as pastoral development, youth ministry, safeguarding, financial and legal compliance, administrative support, marriage tribunal and school advisory services.
The Priest’s dues collection is taken up periodically throughout the year. This is the sole means of income to support our Priests.
The annual financial reports for the year ended 31st March 2025 will be available for distribution soon.
Ways to support
While the tradition of weekly envelopes has and continues to serve us well, we understand that times change, and preferences evolve.
There are a number of ways to support the parish:
1) Contributing to weekly offertory collection taken up at Mass
2) Setting up a Standing Order on a bank account offers a convenient and efficient way to show your support (bank details can be obtained from your parish)
3) Donating online through the parish website (if available) or through the diocesan website
4) One off donation to your parish
5) Consider making a legacy to your parish in your Will.
Gift Aid
Gift Aid allows charities to claim back the basic rate tax already paid on donations by the donor. This means that we can claim back from the government 25p on every £1.00 donated thus boosting the value of the donation by a quarter.
If you are a UK tax payer and receive a taxable income (salaried, state pension, private pension, self employed, investments etc.) and you sign a Gift Aid form the Parish can make a claim on your contribution.
Please contact Caroline in the Parish office if you wish to sign up for the Gift Aid scheme.
Thank you for your attention to these matters which concern the future mission of our parish.
In anticipation of your support and prayerful good wishes,
Rev. Barry Matthews, Administrator, St. Patrick’s Cathedral Parish, Armagh.
